Preparing for the dangers of wet weather driving

On Behalf of | Oct 16, 2017 | car accidents | 0 comments

Summer is now officially behind us and winter is right around the corner, which means that the next several weeks may seem uneventful in terms of Pennsylvania weather. However, fall does come with some weather-related hazards of which drivers must be aware.

Road conditions in wet, colder months can be particularly treacherous. They make it easier for a car to slip and for a driver to lose control. With this in mind, we urge readers to take the following precautions during the fall to hopefully avoid an accident.

  1. Slow down. Slippery roads, wet leaves and tire condition can result in poor traction. And as noted in this AAA brochure, hydroplaning, getting stuck in mud and skidding are all common problems related to poor traction. Slowing down can make it easier to stay in control of your vehicle.
  2. Make sure you can see and be seen by others. Visibility is a major concern during fall months. It’s getting darker earlier and staying dark longer in the mornings, and rain makes matters worse. Be sure your headlines, taillights, brake lights and hazards are all functioning properly. Check your windshield wipers to ensure they in good condition. If you cannot see the road or other vehicles due to poor visibility, pull off the road until the situation improves.
  3. Stay focused on driving. If you are drunk, drowsy, distracted, overly stressed or emotionally distraught, you may not want to get behind the wheel. These conditions compromise your ability to focus on driving safely and make good decisions.

While there may not be tornadoes or blizzards threatening to ruin a driver’s commute right now, everyone still must use caution on Williamsport roads in the coming weeks. By slowing down, focusing on visibility and staying attentive, motorists can avoid serious car crashes and make the roads safer for everyone.

If you do get into an accident caused by a driver who failed to take these precautions, remember that you have the right to discuss your case and possible financial remedies with an attorney.
