Wrong place, wrong time on Halloween? There is hope

It happens. Maybe a Halloween prank got out of hand, or you were positive a friend owned the speakers they gave you for spooky sound effects. Perhaps you went to a costume party and left with the wrong bag, coat or cell phone. Out of the blue, you’re accused of a property crime and facing theft charges.

According to 2016 research from Travelers Insurance, Halloween sees a scary spike in property crime and related insurance claims. Out of the 24 percent increase in claims just that day, 60 percent of those come from theft inside the home.

To avoid being in a scary situation this Halloween, be aware of these easy tips:

  • Enter homes only with the owner’s permission
  • Ask for proof of purchase for large ticket items, like electronics
  • A costume or mask doesn’t always make someone unidentifiable
  • Pranks can start suddenly and get out of hand quickly; it’s best to avoid the situation altogether
  • Know the people you are with and the conditions you will be in
  • If activity seems suspicious, leave immediately to avoid being involved

Being wrongfully accused of taking an item you thought was yours or unknowingly walking off with someone else’s property can be a frightening reality. By being extra careful this Halloween, you can help avoid a messy situation.

However, accusations of theft are serious, even if you feel they are wrongful, and they won’t go away on their own. Because of this, it is crucial that you act to protect yourself.

If you just aren’t sure about a possible theft you or a loved one may be facing, it’s important to be aware of your options and have a plan for the future. With legal help, you don’t have to face this scary situation alone.
