What is reckless driving?

On Behalf of | Jul 10, 2018 | car accidents | 0 comments

Driving safely is an incredibly important responsibility for every motorist in Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, not everyone takes this responsibility seriously.

There are countless motorists across the state who drive recklessly, despite the numerous consequences that they can face. Not only does a driver face at $200 fine for this offense in Pennsylvania, but he or she also increases the risk of accident.

What is reckless driving?

In this state, reckless driving is defined as driving with wanton or willful disregard for other people’s safety or property. Behaviors that can be reckless include:

  • Speeding (or driving too fast for road conditions)
  • Driving too closely to others or tailgating
  • Illegally passing people
  • Ignoring traffic lights and signs
  • Blocking traffic or stopping other drivers from passing
  • Weaving in and out of traffic

These and other types of reckless driving can lead to fines, increased insurance premiums and crashes. However, these penalties are not enough to stop every driver from engaging in unsafe driving behaviors and making poor choices behind the wheel.

Therefore, reckless drivers will continue to be a threat to their safety and the safety of the motorists around them. Should they cause an accident, these parties should be held accountable for their actions, particularly when others suffer significant damages as a result. Victims and their families can do this by filing a legal claim to pursue compensation.

Legal action cannot undo a crash or even fully repair the damage suffered in a catastrophic accident, but it can help those affected by the accident pursue compensation for damages like medical bills, the cost of replacing a car, wrongful death and emotional distress.
