Why is negotiating important during divorce?

If you’re starting down the path of a divorce, one of the best things you can do is learn to negotiate. Negotiation is everything when it comes to resolving your disputes and moving forward with your divorce. Being able to negotiate well is a tactic that can get you what you need and want from your marriage, putting you in a good financial position moving forward.

When you’re going through a divorce, you want to avoid making mistakes that could hurt you. If you say or do things that seem to counter the claims you’ve made, you could give the other party more leverage.

One of the biggest mistakes people make is oversharing. The best example of this is if your partner claims they can’t accept a settlement offer because it costs too much, but then they go on to purchase a new vehicle and go on a vacation. Sharing that information online to “show off” might be fun for them, but it also gives you a great deal of leverage for your case and makes it easier to negotiate for what you want. If they could afford those things, then affording the settlement offer might also be something they can do.

The other mistake people make is not being willing to negotiate. Someone who avoids negotiating time and time again is simply running up a lawyer’s tab and making the divorce more expensive. Knowing when to take a deal and when to walk away is essential so that you can resolve your divorce and move on with your lives in a reasonable time frame.
