Don’t forget to do these things after a car accident

On Behalf of | Aug 9, 2018 | car accidents | 0 comments

Being part of a car accident is a traumatic experience, especially in the event that you suffer a serious injury. With so many things going on around you, from other vehicles to police sirens, it’s not always easy to remain calm and take all the right steps.

Fortunately, if you have advanced knowledge of what you should do in the event of a car accident, it’s much easier to avoid overlooking something of importance.

Here are six steps to take:

  • Check for injuries. In addition to yourself, you should check any passengers. If you find that you or someone else is injured, consider administering first aid until help arrives.
  • Move to safety. It’s not always possible, such as if your vehicle is seriously damaged, but it’s best to move to the side of the road if at all possible. This lessens the likelihood of being part of another accident.
  • Call 911. You shouldn’t wait a single minute to call 911, as you want police to arrive at the scene as quickly as possible. Your call will also ensure that an ambulance rushes to your aid.
  • Wait for help to arrive. Even if you feel up to it, don’t attempt to take matters into your own hands. The responding officer can take control of the scene. Just the same, paramedics can provide you with the appropriate medical care.
  • Exchange information. It’s not easy to do this in the event of a serious accident, but if you have the ability to exchange insurance and contact information with other drivers you should do so.
  • Document the accident. Take notes regarding your vision of what went wrong. Also, pictures of your injuries and damage to your vehicle can help when making an insurance claim.

Your health is more important than anything else, so don’t feel that you have to do all these things if you’re dealing with an injury.

Once you receive treatment, you can contact your insurance company to start the claims process. Stick to the facts and don’t feel pressured into answering any questions that make you uncomfortable.

Even though you do your best to avoid trouble on the road, you could be part of a car accident as the result of another person’s negligence. When this happens, you should do whatever you can to hold them responsible for your injuries and other damages.
